Bureaucracy, overworked prosecutor led to overturn of child sex abuse convictions

A Nova Scotia man got his 17 child sex abuse convictions overturned thanks to the failures of Passport Canada and an overworked Crown attorney, say reports released Wednesday.

Ernest Fenwick MacIntosh was found guilty in 2010 of 17 counts of gross indecency and indecent assault against young boys in the '70s -- 15 years after the first victims went to the police.

The Supreme Court said in April the lengthy process violated MacInosh's rights to be tried within a reasonable time.

A Public Prosecution Serves review released Wednesday said an overworked Crown attorney failed to keep pace with the advancing file of MacIntosh, who refused to come home from India to face trial.  (more...)
